I agree with the other posters. For studio work, or any off-camera work, you're better off metering your flashes manually. However, if you're shooting handheld, a TTL fill flash is VERY helpful.

A powerful flash that tilts and swivels is also much more versatile. You can bounce it off the ceiling for much softer, natural-looking light when you don't have the luxury of setting up light stands and brollies/softboxes.
