With the D800 diffraction will negate any gains in apparent DOF at apertures smaller than f8. Not that unusual as with film most lenses provided the best IQ at f11 for the same reason.
The larger the aperture the less worry about diffraction even with a 2x TC so there are decided advantages to the pro glass with the D800 cameras. Shooting at the larger apertures is where the D800E has an edge over the D800.
