Quick answer - your shutter speed is too slow.  With the limited info I have on your situation, I would suggest trying this set up:

1.  Set shooting mode to S (Shutter Priority)

2.  Dial in shutter speed to at least 1/125 (faster is better for kids, but this should be adequate if they are moving slowly or not at all, plus it is fast enough to prevent camera shake on the kit lens at full telephoto)

3.  Set ISO to Auto

Set focus parameters to AF, Center and Single-shot AF

4.  Make sure you half press the shutter to lock focus and quickly press down when focus is locked.

I normally don't shoot this way, but it should help you if the problem is indeed that you are using too slow of a SS.
