Photo retouch

Hi,

I'm a student who is looking to get a job. I've tried to do get a corporate headshot done based on an old photo but i doesn't seem to be working. I think it's maybe because I'm new.

I've been trying to clear the background as well as crop the picture so that it's a "head and shoulders" kind of shot but it's not working for me. I've got limited time to do this so I was wondering if there was anyone here who could maybe help me out as to how it would look good and professional. I'm not the most photogenic guy in the world but I've tried to do my best.
