I agree.

1/20 is definitely very slow. 98% of your images will be useless.

You'd be much better off with a 50 1.8D, which is the cheapest prime there is on this planet. You can grab a used one for as little as 100USD, and your results would be miles better than either 24-70 or let alone 70-300.

I would never ever try to take party pictures with a 70-300. It is terribly slow to focus and the 3.5 aperture just does not cut it.

Try to rent a cheap 50 1.8 or a 85 1.8 and you'll love your images.
