I'll buy a 600 f4 - at half the price - and suffer the extra pound. And I'll keep my 500 f4 AF-S for hiking/travel.

Putting a 600mm f4 plus a TC 14 E II on a high-res FX or even DX body gives similar reach and very good IQ for a lot less money.

Anybody in for a new version of the classic Nikon 1200-1700mm lens?

Roland,

I agree.  My 600/4 VRII with TC14 produces 850mm (according to the EXIF) and although heavier produces excellant images with my D800 or D4 at airshows even handheld.  Consider also that I can get 25mp at 1020mm/f5.6 also by using the 1.2 crop on the D800E!  A number already published in the short time that I have had it.

When I need something not quite as long, I'll just have my trusty 500mm on the second body.  Airshow action covered.
