One way I find works well in the field is to use the tips of the fingers of the left hand to hold the leaf or twig supporting the insect. Then holding the camera with the right hand rest the camera lens on the base of the left hand. This locks the camera and object together so that micro adjustments to focus can be made with the fingers of the left hand. It even allows a limited amount of focus stacking so long as the insect remains stationary.
