I don't think lens stabilisation could be an issue at 1/40 of a second, so I do think your problem is the very shallow DoF with the RX100 at f/1.8.  You latest shots have a very flat subject, so DoF isn't an issue, but it was a problem with a close-up picture of the girl. Why don't you try shooting her with f/2.8?
