For much of the year, no great need for a polariser here - but I like the way it contributed to improving the "with" photos... even if I don't really understand how? Certainly there can't be any polarised light for it to stop coming from those shadow areas.
The effect seems to have left the sky about the same, whilst allowing more (and warmer) exposure of the rest. It's now evening but, if we're lucky enough to see the sun again tomorrow, I'll repeat with a different metering pattern.

There are plenty of websites and books that will explain (to the death!) how to use a polarizer, but that's no substitute for actually applying to real photographs. Experimentation is everything.

Even better when it's a nice photo to work with.
