Easiest way to think of it is like this:

Shoot a bird with a FF, print an 8x10

Shoot a bird with a DX, print an 8x10

The bird in the DX is going to be bigger because of the crop factor.  HOWEVER, crop the FF a bit and make THAT an 8x10 and they'll look exactly the same.

When a FF or DX camera take a photo, they don't KNOW if theyre FF or DX, but they both capture the image in a format of 3:2, 4:3, etc.  Since the DX crops off part of the filed of view, it makes the subject appear "larger" or "closer" even though it isn't.  Its really that simple and shouldn't be confusing or need ridiculous math equations to figure out.
