Try anti motion blur mode or high ISO (3200 or 6400) to take portrait picture in low light...on human skin this modes looks terrible...i take portrait with S95 handheld ISO 80, f/2, 1/5 sec without any problems and this portrait looks great and natural and all the rest is improvisation.
