I have happily shot with a 35mm equiv f/2.0 on my Fuji X100 since Nov 2011 and love that FOV.  Like someone else said, that's 35mm in a somewhat wider aspect ratio that 4:3...maybe a little wider would work better for that.  I've traveled with that single focal length and been pleased as a primary lens.
I found myself LOVING that FOV, but often wanting a 50mm or close for some closer portrait work without the distortion.  Thus, I'm back to Oly (used to be an E-1, E-3 guy) with the OM-D.  I debated on this very topic myself, this is what I've come to and how I got here...

I initially ordered the 17mm f/2.8 lens ($150 rebate) for the OM-D as I wanted to approximate my familiar shooting experience with the X100.  Nope.  I didn't think going from f/2.0 to f/2.8 was that big of a deal...it was (indoors, low light, family shots without flash). It was just too slow in more ways that one (f stop).  It's AF is abysmal in low light, the X100 actually was focusing faster - and that is not a speedy camera at all.  I have since returned that lens.

So, I started the internal debate 17mm FOV vs. 25mm FOV on m4/3. I KNOW that sometime, I'll end up with the 17 f/1.8.  However, I just wanted to try something a little different after the X100 and my Pan-Leica 25 f/1.4 (that extra speed will be nice and from videos I've seen it's focus is pretty good) arrives tomorrow as my "normal" everyday lens.

It's odd.  I used to be a primary zoom guy:

  • Olympus E-1/E-3: 14-54 f/2.8-3.5
  • Canon D30 (2002) - 20D: 17-40 f/4 L
But then I got the prime buy when I got my GF-1 with the 20 f/1.7 back in 2010? Maybe late 2009. That led me to the X100 as I knew I would be fine with a single prime lens.  I added an X10 and an X-S1.  The OM-D replaces them all.
The 17mm vs. 25mm debate, for me, is to replace my X100 and be main walk around set up sans OM-D grip (or maybe just he first part). I'll give the 25 1.4 a shot, that extra low light ability may be the one that seals the deal vs. the f/1.8. For now, my kit looks like this....
  • OM-D & old GF-1
  • O 12-50 (why the f/6.3 is beyond me, but it's still a good all around lens)
  • PL 25 (looking forward to this)
  • O 45 (a real GEM of a lens + a $250 rebate! If the 17 1.8 had a rebate, that would have been it)
  • P 45-175 (I've found it to be a very good little lens!)
