Far back in the early 2000's even pro's and serious amateurs bought into the idea the cropped sensors gave you a longer focal length. Eventually they figured it out, a 300mm lens is a 300mm lens, but if you crop a full frame image to the size of a Canon APS-C size image, its as though you are using a longer lens, but of course you aren't.

Many, even in places like Pop Photo, know the correct understanding but they talk in the old way - "the lens is like a 480mm (of a 300mm lens)" - when talking about cropped sensors because the idea is still so strong and prevalent.

You get it and that's what's important, just accept that most in the world don't.
