I do not think the comment "pay $80 to Adobe to support your new camera" is a fair comment. Adobe did not sell you your new camera and I am sure you would have been provided with software by your camera manufacturer to enable you to process the raw files from the camera.

If you choose Adobe software to process your camera files that was your choice. Having to update the software from Adobe is a regular cycle which takes place approximately every 18 months and includes all their photo editing/processing software, Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements and the related raw processing plugin ACR and Lightroom.
