If shutter shock existed wouldn't it show up when mounted on a tripod? I shoot a fair amount on a tripod and I never see it, IS on or off (yes I know it should be off, but sometimes forget). My tripod shots are perfectly sharp unless I misfocus.

Are you sure ? My 12-50 shots were ok until I tried with anti shock enabled.

Take a look at this - both were taken from a tripod and first one (AS OFF) looks perfectly ok, right ?

the second one had 1/8s anti shock enabled. Zoom to 100%

Almost impossible to see unless pixel peeping, but from 100% original file the difference is pretty obvious.

And this example I see as no-issue. The real issue I had with Olympus 40-150mm lens - that was impossible not to notice.

I do find, however, that the IS in general is hit and miss for me handholding at lower shutter speeds (hence my preference for a tripod if shutter speeds dip).

The IS is absolutely amazing as a viewfinder stabilizer when doing handheld manual focus.
