HP IPS panel viewing angle

I retired my almost ten year old monitor, and bought an IPS panel display to replace it; image quality is much better, but I'm really confused about the supposed wide viewing angle. If I look at it even from a modest angle, there's an obvious loss of contrast, I wouldn't say it's any better in that regard than my old monitor. What's your experience with IPS displays?
