With smaller subjects, it's best to shoot from low, and also try to isolate the subject from the background.  If you could find an angle with fewer people in the background, that might help.

As someone else mentioned, more motion blur can actually help the look of your image, giving it more of a sense of movement.

This is not posted as a paragon of what to do, it's merely there to show that I feel your pain.  I was shooting with the old 5D, so ISO1600 was pretty much the max I could use.  Shot at 1/640 and f2.8
