Interesting... you may be onto something here.  I just tried going through the gamut of centre weighting areas.  As I went from 8mm to 20mm, the effect became more pronounced.  So it's definitely something to do with metering area.  I also noted that the effect is more pronounced at higher shutter speeds - when exposing darker scenes, the effect is much less pronounced, but I think this is to be expected - the difference between 1/320 and 1/200 is much greater than the difference between say 1s and 1.2.

So then I guess I'm left asking what (equivalent?) size area LV uses for metering...
