Mike may choose to answer as well, and I do not mean to butt in, but, yes, that is is pretty much it. Focus point will not change when you take a photo with the lens stopped down, the depth of field simply becomes greater. Depth of field preview allows you to see, first-hand, the changes in depth of field before you actually take the shot. The camera always uses the widest available aperture to auto focus with. If you are set to f16, the camera auto focuses at, in your case, f5.6, then stops the lens down to f16 when the shutter is pressed. After the exposure is made, the lens returns to f5.6, ready to set focus on your next shot.
