Correct. Having the ability to gauge the quality of an image based on a 2400 wide example comes over time.
A combination of experience, knowledge and your own abilities all help one to make an informed judgement on the quality of an image possible, even if it is slightly less than the full original size.
If he is not there yet then that's fine.
