Yeah, I just tested the standard burst mode on the NEX-6 because I wasn't sure if that locks exposure on the first shot and it does. So at full resolution the camera just can't handle re-adjusting exposure.

I don't have the time lapse app but it would be similar to a really long burst wouldn't it? (although I hope it keeps the shutter open or something because that clicking would be annoying).

Now in video though shooting at the reduced resolution but at insane shutter speeds if desired (standard 1/60 or 1/30 for mp4) the camera does of course adjust exposure. So if there was an option for the time lapse at reduced resolution with exposure adjustment, I would take that rather then nothing. Based on the existing camera capabilities in video, it should be doable in software.
