Which 70-200/2.8 do you have - the VRI or VRII?

Did you have VR on, if so which mode?

There could be lots of things wrong with your technique that really show up on a D800. I know I had to up the quality of my technique on my D800 to get sharp pics at 36MP resolution. Give us some more details and some more sample images.

Also I noticed that this example is shot wide open - generally you'll need to stop down to f/8 with this combo to get better results.
