Is a tripod mandatory?

It very much depends on what you're shooting. If you're likely to be using slow shutter speeds, a tripod would be good, but for snapshots in good light you'd be fine without. When you say "carrying around everywhere" it makes me think that you're generally shooting 'out and about' in good light, and that a tripod isn't an absolute must for you. Buy one when you feel you need one.
