Panoramics using just a slide rail?

I've used an extreme variation of your idea, I wanted to get a panorama of the Royal Maritime Museum on the south bank of the Thames in London so I got on a boat and held the camera pointed at the bank and took a shot every few seconds as the boat became the sliding rail. Ended up with 19 images which PS CS3 turned into an 84" x 8" panorama.
