+1,000,000. I think this is the simplest yet accurate method to fine tune a lens. Curious, can one test D800 for left AF problem this way?

Absolutely. Fine tune the lens first and then select the AF point you want to test and move between LV and AF focus methods and observe focus movement on the lens between the two methods OR using only AF, observe focus movement between focus points as you select different focus points. Either method willl show up inconsistency in AF performance from point to point.
