I could live with the proposals from the OP which (My opinion only) seem to be pretty much common sense.

Unfortunately, we North American buyers have been spoiled with liberal return policies. I don't think this is likely to change any time soon. Just too much customer resistance, and each seller would be reluctant to take the "sales hit" as the first implementer.

Yes, I think if people want something like a "great return policy" they will have to live with companies now and then trying to sell used for new. And if even big companies like B&H can't stay honest and not now and then try selling used for new, it's easy to see that such a return system can't really work!

I would like to hear the opinion of European buyers who, I am led to believe, do not have such generous return policies, and may have to pay restocking fees for a return. I think their concept is, "if you bought it and it is not defective, it's yours."

Yes, I first make up my mind and only then I buy something. And I would not expect a seller to take back a camera I have used for a couple days only because I made up my mind that I don't like the color and now prefer silver over black or something similarly silly!

For me its obvious that generous return policies have a cost.

Imagine many buyers use their cameras for a few days and then return it.

Companies are, in turn , forced to sell such cameras at a ver reduced price.

Someone must bear the cost of such loss of income.

Either the companies will go bankrupt.., or they must raise significantly the price of the new cameras in order to cover the losses they have when they sell used ones.

In this case the fellows who benefit : The people who buy refurbished cameras. ( they buy them at discounted price).

The ones who bear the costs of such policies : People who buy new stuff. They pay a significantly higher price in order to subsidize the discounts of the refurnished items.

Of course such system is unfair.

As a consumer, aware of that, I have no problem buying an used item as new.

Knowing full well many people return perfectly working cameras, and aware sellers cant bear the cost of such gestures.., I have no problem bearing the cost of generous return policies.

The cost is to buy as new a slightly used camera.

Would you buy a car (as a new car) someone drove for a hundred miles and returned, and pay full price?

That is a small cost for the benefit of having the possibility to return a camera if I really do not like it.

It is unfair that sellers bear the cost of whims of guys that return cameras just because they do not like the color.., or the plastic body or God knows what.
