My knee-jerk reaction is that although NEX and other mirrorless cameras have been very successful, the install base for these cameras is still tiny compared to DSLRs. The sensor and lenses are there, as others have mentioned.

This is also an English forum, and as such a lot of the users are probably North American. I think mirrorless is supposed to have taken off more in other parts of the world than it has over there. Here in Asia I see far more mirrorless cameras than I used to.

I think part of your answer is also key. The NEX community is rather small compared to the vast Nikon, Canon, Sony DSLR's groups.

Interesting though that in terms of sales the gap isnt nearly as large.

My guess would be that mirrorless cameras generally are more likely to be bought by less "serious" users, that doesnt preclude serious users of course but the smaller size does clearly seem to target more casual users.

You're assuming serious photographers are the ones showing up in DPR challenges.

PS. Serious photographers own mirrorless cameras. Heck, who wouldn't want to own a Leica M9?
