I think the Rule of Thirds is an excellent suggestion for design and aesthetics and as been shown to be approprate many times over human history. What we need to understand is not that we should break it but that there are also other rules or suggestions. The Rule of Thirds is just one really good tool in our toolkit.

I think its the wording, even saying "break it" implies there is something of substance that could be broken.

While I don't disagree that it can be useful, it hardly needs speeches to be made in its support, when it's already over-sold. What would be more useful in my opinion, would be to put forward some of the other ideas, in order to show that there are many choices, not just a single yes/no.
