Migrating from a 1 ghz Ppc G4 emac to new 27" iMac

I haven't done a data migration in about 10 years.
It seems apple doesn't recommend migration assistant in this scenario:
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
The only stuff I really want from the old emac is old emails, music and raw and jpeg files. Also a driver for my epson scanner. I've gotten used to my Logitech mouse too.
PS6 is in the wings and waiting
Is this going to be a messy job with me on the phone with Apple all day? Will an ethernet connection between the two computers be able to transfer data or what cables will I need? eMac has FW400 and usb 1
Any advice, help or links you can provide will be appreciated
