You may be right about the limited range, in practicality it's not far off being a wide prime. You can really only put it on the camera when you know you need quite wide angle, and not somewhere between moderate wide and very wide, as a 12-24 does (on DX).

I have no complaints about the lens itself, it performs as expected and is sharp, wide and fast. But I only put it on when I know for sure I can take advantage of a really wide angle, which is not that often. 12-24 on the other hand could be used with say shots with small groups of people (when well composed) and is generally more versatile range.
