I don't know about the EF 42, but I can use the popup flash to trigger a Yongnuo YN-560. I had some trouble at first getting the YN-560 into the right mode (the instruction manual for this flash is pretty bad) but once I got it set right it would trigger reliably from the XE 1 pop up flash.
