It's MASSIVELY faster

But you don't HAVE to shoot higher than ISO 400 because the LX7 has such a faster lens than the kit lens on the m43 camera. In fact, on account of the fast lens, the LX7 is actually a better low-light camera than then E-PM1 with the kit lens.
And you should really shoot RAW if you want to get the best out of your cameras. Default JPEGs are tuned to what the average point-and-shoot consumer wants and not what serious photographers want. The E-PM1 has pretty poor JPEGs because of overdone noise reduction in shadows.
Now as I said before, you CAN get a little better IQ from even an old generation m43 under SOME circumstances, but it's close.
Well, I get to compare for my own self. I just ordered an E-PM1 and it'll be here early next week.
-I have a hard time believing the LX7 can shoot at ISO 200 all day indoors just because it has a slightly "faster" lens.
F/1.4 vs f/3.5 for the typical kit lens. That's not just "slightly" faster, it's MASSIVELY faster.
-I never shoot raw. Well, raw + jpeg sometimes (with my Nikon DSLRs) but I've never seen the point in just shooting in raw. And I'm a pretty serious shooter.
-"The E-PM1 has pretty poor JPEGS". Huh? All reports that led me to buy one say the E-PM1 has great jpegs.
-"overdone noise reduction in shadows" Can't you turn off the noise reduction? Yes, you can according to the manual. I'll do my own NR in LR4 or Topaz DeNoise.
-"old generation m4/3". So any Oly m4/3 with the 12 meg sensor, including the newest ones with TruPic VI are now considered "old" on this forum?
No, you can't turn off noise reduction in the E-PM1 shadows unless you shoot raw. This was Olympus's attempt to "fix" what was perceived as a big problem with the shadow noise in the Panasonic sensor. Olympus finally fixed the problem for real in the E-M5 and E-PM2 by using a Sony sensor.
I guess the E-PM1 has pretty good JPEGs if you are not looking at the deep shadows which look all weird and funky because of the massively overdone noise reduction. And once you see it, you can't stop being drawn to the huge ugliness.
