You might think that but actually the Simplex Multi (shown below), a Brooklyn-made "miniature" camera for both stills and movies, using 35mm film, with 2X3 aspect ratio images, went into production in 1914, quite a while before commercially available Leicas. There were others, as well, before the Simplex, but the Simplex was the first to feature the 2X3 aspect ratio that became standard on 35mm.
