Permissions for Dummies

I am getting frustrated trying to understand "security" settings.

My frustration is caused by my lack of basic understanding about permissions and I want to invest some time correcting this shortcoming.

I have folders that are displaying a lock icon, some folders that tell me I do not have permission to open and settings I just don't understand.

I need a site, tutorial, or book with titles something like "Permissions for Dummies".
