Very basic background questions

I've never done any studio photography, but want to take some photos of my six month old with a blank background. Our house has a second story "sunroom" with lots of large windows which is now the nursery. This room gets incredible natural daylight and I thought we could just push the crib back to create some room and put some kind of background in front of the crib to keep the photo uncluttered.
Can anyone recommend a simple background that i can purchase at Calumet for this? I'm not sure whether it's best to use paper, PVC or cloth. Also, what color would you recommend? Any other thoughts or tips?
Thanks in advance for your help.
