AF reliability varies with a size of the focus reading area?

This topic came up as part of another thread recently and, interestingly, people were getting confused between the low/high light vs large/small box.  I thought the consensus was that you use a small box in brighter conditions.  No doubt... next time I am out taking pics I am going to be banging my head trying to remember which way the rule goes.
