My workflow includes renaming every file, YYYYMMDD_Event_Name.filetype. That way it's easy to filter and search on file names.
No, I didn't rename them but you are right, this would be a good thing to do as it adds another layer of protection at no cost really.
I always rename on import, but you don't have to do that in order to search for your images. Aperture can search on capture date, including a range of capture dates. And, if I remember correctly (I'm using my iPad to type this, so I can't check it) the latest version of Aperture has an option to show the last import as well (although that may be garbled by a crash).
