Absolutely. Not all photos, of course, are going to benefit from greater DR, just as not all photos are going to benefit from lower noise, more shallow DOF, more pixels, etc., etc., etc.

LOL Extreme curves to "develop into shadows" usually result in something very different from beautiful photos.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

That expression is somewhat abused.

it's fair to say that you don't like the look of photos processed with agressive tone curves

Please show me a good one, where the curve is applied not because of exposure mistake, and I will be happy to change my opinion.
