for those that decry DR measurements as being bogus because they don't see any evidence of greater DR from sensors that have greater DR, that's because they've not seen photos which apply tone curves to the captured files that make use of the sensor's extended DR.

One important thing to "they've not seen photos which apply tone curves to the captured files that make use of the sensor's extended DR" - and still remain beautiful photos.

Absolutely. Not all photos, of course, are going to benefit from greater DR, just as not all photos are going to benefit from lower noise, more shallow DOF, more pixels, etc., etc., etc.

LOL Extreme curves to "develop into shadows" usually result in something very different from beautiful photos.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  For example, many disparage shallow DOF photography, whereas I have quite a liking for it.  In addition, what is usual for one photographer may well be rare for another.

In other words, it's fair to say that you don't like the look of photos processed with agressive tone curves, just as it's fair for someone to say they don't like the look of shallow DOF.  Thus, wide DR may hold little appeal to you, just as wide aperture lenses might hold little appeal for another.  But that is not to say that others don't have an interest.

Photographically, dynamic range is the number of stops where the image retains enough photographic quality: resolution, colour fidelity, agreeable amount of artifacts.

Which is determined by choosing the "appropriate" noise floor

Absolutely not. You need to define noise aesthetics.

Precisely -- it's the "noise aesthetics" that determines the noise floor for "useable DR".  This is not to say, of course, that all will agree on the "appropriate" noise floor, but, in my opinion, it's a discussion worth having.
