Nice post, thanks for taking the time to write this up.

I fully agree with Aleo regarding honesty respect. Another thing i'm missing in most forums is humor.

Agree, but not totally. There are some funny people on these forums if you know to look for which names. I'm not going to name them in order not to embarass. Some are funny deliberately, some others are funniest when they try to be serious.

In real life i have met the persons you describe, not only in situations related to photography. But as long as you know why you chose the equipment you are working with (because it is the best choice for you , what you are doing and what you can afford), depending on your mood you can either smile and walk away, start a friendly discussion or start to fight. Real life is very much the same as internet forums, the only difference is that we are usually a bit more polite when talking eye to eye, probably because we can see (and feel) if we hurt somebody but we do not get that kind of instant feedback when writing a post.

Agree.

I can tell you some funny stories regarding my photo equipment, i am female, blond and used to shoot with FT (wildlife, sports and people/nudes in a studio). Let your imagination run wild

I've rarely been patronized by professional photographers, 99% of them were either honestly interested in my gear or ignored equipment and talked about technique, best location, ... I used to cover the home games of a local football team for one season and was allowed to shoot together with the press photographers. Not a single one ever tried to convince me to change from FT to something else. I used the E-Pl1 and E-P3 in the studio and never had problems with the models but occationally with amateurs with C/N gear when sharing some models.

The place where I meet some pros now and then is in the frontstage area of a concert.

They will at most throw an interested glance on my equipment (still FT for that), but don't get into pi$$ing contests. They probably know just as well as I do, that one should look at a person's results, not at his tools.

I don't think that in the culinary world, chefs argue a lot about the knives they use. It is mostly the amateur-elitists (like you call them) that go on about the latest carbon-reinforced or ceramic blades, but then those expensive knives of theirs very often doesn't see much use.

Ambitious amateur wildlife photographers on the other hand are a strange kind of people, i've never been treated with so much gear contempt, no matter if on a safari or in a local wildlife park ... until they look at my pictures (usually only if they have to ;-)). Then things usually change

I can relate.

To this date, my family still knows exactly what we mean when we call someone a "Pie Vert" (that's a green woodpecker).

We once were on holiday in the Camargue and took a nature & sight-seeing guided tour.

I had my E-330 at the time with the kit lenses and I had it along to capture some shots of wife and kids and maybe some landscapes.

A french guy was on our tour. For starters, while still waiting for the tour to start, he was amazed that our children (Belgian but from the Flemish part) did not speak impeccable french (they were 4 and 2 at the time).

Then he opened the trunk of his car and took out a huge canikon camera with the biggest telephoto prime I had ever seen. He sniffed at my Oly and said that if I wanted to catch bird shots, I had better dump the Oly and invest in serious gear. Bird shots had not even been on my mind so that information was shared by him quite voluntarily.

He lugged around the heavy lens on all of our walk. During that walk, he kept telling me about this amazing shot of a green woodpecker he had once made, after hours of stalking the poor bird.

I made the occasional photo, but he never put the camera to his eye. It was like a fitness exercize for him.

During the long walk we did not spot a single interesting bird, neither near nor far. Probably the wrong time of day or season.

He came back exhausted and grumpy and left without saying goodbye. He was probably also angry at himself for joining a walk through the Camargue with a family with noisy children...

Since then, my wife always says that she supports my photography interests, as long as I don't ever turn into a "Pie Vert".

Great episode. Enjoyed much.

Being a moderator on a forum also has a funny effect. People will start to hate you simply because you are the moderator, no matter what you do. And others start to praise your images and posts, no matter if they are good or bad, just because you are a moderator. I once joined the Photowalking Munich group for a day of shooting at the Munich airport and introduced myself with my real first name instead of my nick used in the German DSLR forum. I used the E-420 on that day and was completely ignored by a dozen people i knew from previous conversations in that forum, others told me that i'd never get anything done as long as i was using inferior gear. That was my one and only excursion with that group, i don't like wannabe-elitists

Very recognizable.

In the end, photography and talking about gear is a hobby for most of us and hobbies should be fun.

I always feel it is more fun to talk about photos than about photo gear. Maybe I am in the wrong forum. But I cope.

Sabine
