I solved it! Cut two squares of rubber drawer liner (about 4" Sq.) Put one square in my palm then the stuck lens/adapter then the other square of rubber. Pressing my two palms together (so as not to pinch the sides of the lens/adapter) I twisted and it came right apart. I had been trying to pinch the knurled grips on the sides of the lens/adapter and no amount of force would loosen it.
I don't have rubber drawer liners, so I tried flat rubber gripping pads and they do not work. I think what I need is a pair of small pipe wrenches.
But after repeated efforts to separate them, I think the filter adapter and my Hoya 58 mm polarizing filter may have fused at the intersection of the threads and will be forever together.
So if I want to use another filter, I will have to buy another filter adapter.
Another case of engineers feeling they are too brilliant to have to listen to consumers? After all, how many consumers can do differential equations?
A separate issue for me is that i like very much the JCCC auto lens cap, it saves me taking the lens cap on and off, it's very convenient, but it is incompatible with the filter holder. If I really need to use a filter I would have to take it off and replace it with the original Canon cylinder and lens cap. So I will rarely use filters, I like to keep things simple so my photography can be spontaneous and focused on what I am photographing, not on my equipment.
But I am still irritated that the filter and filter holder have fused together. Maybe I have cross-threaded it, or maybe the threads simply bond together too easily even when correctly threaded together..
