Now that I've sold my NEXes (5, 5n, 7) and some more gear, left with nothing but my trusty X10 I'm still torn between the X20 and the OM-D (E-PL5).

Is that because they are so similar?

Seriously ... if you think the X10 or X20 (same camera with slightly better IQ) are enough, then why consider blowing all that cash on the O-MD? And if you feel you need a MILC, then how does the X20 compete?

I agree that the X20 is more of a second camera for a large sensor ILC or FF DSLR user, but I do think you a slight underestimating the X10/X20.  It shoots really a lot bigger than it's sensor, has good DOF control, at least up close.

And the X10 gets only around 1/3 EV or a bit more worse high than the Sony RX100.  To put it in perspective, the GX1 gets maybe 1/2 or 2/3 EV better high ISO performance than the RX100, and The OM-D get's around 1 EV better than the Sony.  With the new X-Trans sensor without an OLPF, the X20 should be very competitive for resolution and high ISO performance.

I really don't want to own more than one, relatively compact, fast and flexible camera that serves all my photographic needs, including clean large (20+ inches) prints.

20+" prints from a 2/3" sensor ... perhaps in bright sunshine ...

Someone else mentioned the Panny GX1 a while ago but I'd prefer the Olys ... faster AF ?!

The Pannies are very fast too ... despite the chorus of Oly fan boys' opinion.

, flip screen,

Get the G3 or G5 depending on your budget. Still quite small and a real flippy LCD. Much more useful than just the one that moves up and down.

They are practically giving the G3 away now, as it's around $299 for the body.  I'm not crazy about the colors from the GX1/G3 (the greens always seen a bit cartoonish), but I am a fan of the GX1 and have owned two of them.  Excellent shooter with the 20 1.7, good IQ and video quality.

Oly jpgs and colors (skin!).

Oh well ... a JPEG shooter. Then you want Oly or Fuji ... unless of course you like accurate color. That would be Panasonic.

Olympus used to have some of the very best JPEGs in photography.  Now they use way too much NR, and even the EM-5 has high NR, and artifacts that are not at all pleasing.  Of course, now we are talking about pixel peeping.  But now the Fuji colors and completely useable OOC JPEGs make their cameras extremely nice to use.

Next to the X20 (X10) the OM-D with a standard zoom seems fairly large, but that's about the only drawback that holds me back from buying it.

So money is no object. Then why are you not looking at the X100s? Or a Leica?

Yes, don't know many amateurs who are willing to plunk down for a Leica unless you are talking about an X2.  In which case, the X100 or X100s is a significantly better camera than the X2 with it's slow 24 2.8 lens, and no VF (except for an optional EVF).  The X100s hybrid VF is going to be one of the nicest ever in a mirrorless.

We all have to wait and see if Fuji holds up to their promises, but if they do the X20 could be the new king of compact cams

What does that even mean?

I'm guess he means Fuji's claims that the X20, which won't have an AA-filter will match resolution of the RX100 and even m43. Not sure about that, but I'm quite sure the X20 will be one of the best compacts ever made.  (I'm not an RX100 fan in spite of owning one, the slow f4.9 at full tele is kind of dark, and limiting for DOF control).

and the only way to top its IQ and speed, while keeping it relatively compact would lead straight into m43 territory.

Lol ... because the 1" sensors cannot compete. Keep telling yourself that ...

1" sensors are great.  I have a Nikon V1 that has very good IQ.  The RX100 also has excellent IQ.  But for me there is much more to a camera than it's sensor, and the X10/X20 just ticks all the boxes for me as a compact.  I have no interest in comparing it to larger sensor ILCs, as for me IQ of the X20 will be more than good enough for it's purposes.  After all I don't need my second or third camera to match my FF DSLR.
