Take your test shots outdoors..

For your real world subjects you should eliminate any chance that you are introducing camera shake into your sharpness evaluaton. You should also try to use the aperture "sweet spot" of your lens, usually f8. Try to take your test pictures outdoors in sunlight with a fast shutter speed, 1/500 or more at f8. Using 1/60th at f5 on an inexpensive lens introduces several other potential causes beyond sensor performance of unsharp pictures.
