Never shot anything pointing camera up, but I just checked my setup to see, if it was able to point straight up. Whether the camera is in landscape or portrait mode doesn't matter...
so was is able to point straight up? alot of architecture shots are done like that. and i've seen alot of shots in the forest done this way. here's one i did: http://500px.com/photo/17174655. or take a look at this picture, although it was not done by me: http://500px.com/photo/21943927. i would like to have a head that can do this.

I wouldn't count on it, as I've seen reviews, where the clamp of the ballhead is touching the base of the ballhead housing...
My ballhead is a "normal-sized" one, so despite using a panorama clamp, it went clear of the housing. I know this may not be the case if you're using the "low-profile" ballheads...
