Never shot anything pointing camera up, but I just checked my setup to see, if it was able to point straight up. Whether the camera is in landscape or portrait mode doesn't matter...

I wouldn't count on it, as I've seen reviews, where the clamp of the ballhead is touching the base of the ballhead housing...
My ballhead is a "normal-sized" one, so despite using a panorama clamp, it went clear of the housing. I know this may not be the case if you're using the "low-profile" ballheads...
