All of the following values are taken from the preceding conversation - there is a context, you know.

1. 25mm f/1.4 lens for an m43 camera

2. 50mm f/? lens for a 'full frame' 35mm camera

Now you have your focal lengths and your sensor size. Using the context of our conversation, what's the correct f-stop value for the 50mm lens?

F/1.4 for its light gathering ability.

F/2.8 for its DOF characteristics when capturing the same scene.

Thanks, but I already knew the answer

The question is, why would Mr. Noble tell the original poster not to double the F number and simply leave it at that, when the original poster is obviously interested in and uncertain about the answer, and when Mr. Noble's answer is incomplete and, at best, misleading.

The correct answer, as you've stated, is to double the F number when DOF is key, and to leave it untouched when light-gathering is key. Furthermore, in my understanding, 'equivalence,' in this context, refers to DOF. The original poster specifically mentioned 'equivalence,' meaning that his doubling of focal lengths and F numbers was correct, in opposition to Mr. Nobel's claims otherwise.

As you can probably see, Mr. Noble likes to play cat and mouse games. He's yet to answer the question, although I'm quite sure the question has been clear to him since yesterday.

Anyway, thanks for the confirmation. Hopefully the discussion will be of more use to the original poster, and to others learning about equivalence, than Mr. Noble's misleading and unhelpful answer was.

Tex,

The OP asked for "suitable apertures for DOF and low light performance (indoor portrait work)." So "equivalence" in this context can mean two very different things. Not everyone knows that light intensity is constant if the f-stop and focal length are constant but the sensor size varies. You will find lots of DPReview threads that debate that point, even among experienced photographers. Of course you will now say that you "already knew the answer :-)" to that one as well? Start your own thread on the topic. This thread is about the OP's understanding, not about your ego. You are the one playing the cat and mouse games.

Why are you even posting here? You made three posts and not a single like, in other words, no one has a clue what you are trying to say, or at least those who do, don't agree, or don't like how you are saying it. Surely you must realise that your unhelpful style is not helping anybody?

You clearly have some knowledge, why not use it to try to help others, rather than simply show off and trying to make them feel small. Trust me, in the long long run, trying to help others understand what you already know will be to your advantage. Or don't. Your call.
