Question about Canon MG8220 ink use, i.e. how much?

My question is to any one who has experience with the Canon Pixma MG8220 printer. I have read in reviews that it goes through a cleaning cycle before each use. My question is does it go through a cleaning cycle before each use even if it is left on continuously, or is it just when the machine is turned off, and on. Thanks in advance for any help.
