I looked at the sensor rating, at ISO 800, the DR is below 9. Not good.

Hi Jon

DxOmark rates the D300 sensor at 9.89 @ manufacturer ISO of 800.

That's almost one stop above what you are stating.

Where did I miss the ball here please?

Kevin, I was off by one stop.  Oops.  But, ISO 800 measures just 571, so at an actual ISO 800, DR is close to 9.5.  Not a huge difference, but still not an exciting number.  The new 5200 sensor is a bit over 11 at a measured ISO 800, the D4 is over 12.  In today's world, the sensor seems to be the limiting factor for the D300, especially considering the sensors in new soccer mom's DSLRs.  But, I'll probably keep the D300 rather than upgrading one stop as expected in the D400.  We'll see.
