Please help with filter adapter for G1X

I recently purchased a G1X along with Canon filter adapter so I could use the 58mm Close-up lens. I also purchased a circular polarizing filter and UV filter. I put the adapter on one of the filters to try on the camera and now I can't get the filter and adapter unscrewed. Are they supposed to be a one shot combination? I paid some $30. for the plastic Canon Adapter and don't wish to purchase a separate one for each filter.
