damn the 100-300mm looks soft. But, it's being compared to a camera and lens that's approx 5x as expensive??

Excellent pictures. Are you sure you aren't confusing which picture is softer? That on the left which clearly shows more resolution is from the GH3 just look at the tree bark. Just because the GH3 picture is darker than that from the DSLR and 600mm lens does not mean it is softer.

I think the tree bark has more detail in the GH3 due to the wider depth of field.  That said, I don't find the GH3 shot overly soft.
